plum torte-sweet,tart fall perfection!

This week I went to the Public Market in Rochester, NY.  I hadn’t been to “the market” in many years, and I had forgotten how great a place it is!  I went in with $30 and came out with my back seat filled with the most beautiful, locally grown produce!   I have been inspired by the bounty, and the next few posts will be my adventures of canning and preserving (which I also have not done in years and forever), but todays post is all about one of my favorite childhood treats.  Plum torte!   You can find recipes for this on the web called plum tartin, plum cake, pflaumenkuchen, Zwetschgenkuchen…..but in our house it was always plum torte!  Mom always used black “prune” plums (that she called Italian plums), and I usually do too, but at the market I found the cutest small black plums So here, without further ado…the first recipe on my blog for plum torte!

Mom’s Plum Torte

1/2 c butter

1/2 c sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla extract (or 1/2 tsp. plus 1/2 tsp. almond or lemon extract)

1 c flour 1 tsp. baking powder (aluminum free)

1/4 tsp. salt

Topping: 1/2 c. sugar + 1 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375º.  Butter an 8×8 pan.  Cream together butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.  Add the eggs and vanilla (and almond or lemon extract).  Combine flour, baking powder and salt.  Add it in all at once and just mix until combined.  Don’t overmix or your batter will be tough!  (Mixing builds gluten which you want in bread, but not in pastry!)  Spread in the bottom of your buttered pan.

Place the plum halves into the batter by laying them on top, skin sides down, and pressing gently to “set them” in the batter.  Then spread the topping over the top of it all.  It will look like way too much cinnamon sugar, but it isn’t!  Trust me!  

Bake in the center of the oven for 30-35 minutes until the plums have begun to give off their juice and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.  

Allow this baby to cool to room temperature before trying to eat it.  Meanwhile brew a pot of coffee or tea and get ready for a deliciously buttery, spicy, sweet, tart tender cake.  Oh my!  

I made my torte in a circular pan this time and arranged my baby plums in a petal pattern. 

Look at how pretty and pink those plums are!  


Isn’t it beautiful?  Give it a try, I guarantee you’ll love my plum torte!  It is a really tasty tidbit!

    I was midway into the recipe and saw the reference to sugar & cinnamon… did you leave that out of the ingredients and steps? Anyhow, I ad libbed and it is now happily baking…

    • Hi Martha! Thanks for catching that! This was one of my first posts and I must have edited it incorrectly as I was messing around with the formatting. I have fixed the recipe to include 1/2 c. of sugar + 1 tsp. of cinnamon to spoon over the plums. I just bought plums to make this for us too! It’s such a great fall treat and I hope you enjoy it!
